Uplands

The Uplands Trail really does, like Under Milk Wood “begin at the beginning” for it was in this area of the town that Dylan was born and spent the formative years of his life.

Although Dylan moved away to London and beyond, much of his most important work was written while he lived here in the Uplands.

Writing in 1933 to Pamela Hansford Johnson – his first real girlfriend – Dylan describes his typical Swansea day, “…I read until about twelve or thereabouts …… then down the hill to the Uplands (a lowland collection of crossroads and shops) for one (or perhaps two) pints of beer in the Uplands Hotel….”

The Uplands Trail will be published online soon.
