Ronald Cour

Ronald Cour - 1914 – 1978

The painter, sculptor and teacher Ronald Cour was another of Dylan's talented contemporaries. He participated in many group exhibitions, including the Welsh Group of which he was chairman (1965-78), in the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery and the New Vision Centre.

In 1947 he was first appointed to the sculpture department at Swansea College of Art where he taught modelling, carving and related subjects. He exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1945 and 1949 as well as in the New Vision Gallery in London. Ronald Cour carved the last three lines of 'Fern Hill' into the Dylan Thomas Memorial Stone at Cwmdonkin Park, which was dedicated on 9 November 1963.

Vernon Watkins, who worked with him on the project, wrote two lyric poems, 'At Cwmrhydyceirw Quarry' and 'Cwmrhydyceirw Elegaics', to commemorate the occasion.
