Mervyn Levy

Mervyn Levy - 1915 – 1996

Mervyn Levy first met Dylan when as small and mischievous boys they both attended the Dame School ran by Mrs Hole, just round the corner from Cwmdonkin Drive. Mervyn went on, like Fred Janes, to Art school in London and Dylan lived with them when he first moved there.

Mervyn enjoyed a rich and successful career as artist, art critic and broadcaster and sometime canny dealer. Among his many publications are studies of the work of James Whistler, L.S. Lowry and D.H. Lawrence. His drawings of Dylan are held by the National Portrait Gallery and the National Library of Wales and in the collection here.

Mervyn spoke of his friendship with Thomas during an event at the 1995 Year of Literature held at the Dylan Thomas Centre, and is one of those interviewed on the film shown on the big screen in the main room of the exhibition at the Dylan Thomas Centre in Swansea.
